accelerated resolution therapy

Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) is an evidence-based psychotherapy approach designed to help individuals process distressing memories and reduce the emotional and physical reactions connected to them. ART works by helping the brain reprocess how traumatic memories and imagery are stored — often leading to relief more quickly than traditional talk therapy alone.

Rather than repeatedly discussing painful events in detail, ART focuses on helping the brain “recode” distressing memories so they no longer trigger the same level of emotional intensity.

Accelerated Resolution Therapy

What Is Accelerated Resolution Therapy?

Accelerated Resolution Therapy combines guided memory visualization techniques with gentle horizontal eye movements. This process supports memory reconsolidation — a natural brain function that allows new, healthier information to be integrated into existing memories.

As the brain reprocesses these experiences, emotional distress often decreases, negative imagery softens, and the body’s stress response becomes calmer and more regulated.

Many individuals experience meaningful relief in as few as one to five sessions, depending on their unique needs and history.

How ART Works

ART is a structured, client-centered therapy conducted at a pace that feels safe and supportive. During sessions, your therapist will guide you through:

  • Identifying distressing memories or triggers
  • Using visualization techniques to reshape how those memories are experienced
  • Engaging in bilateral eye movements to support reprocessing
  • Reducing emotional and physiological reactions tied to past events
  • Replacing negative imagery with more adaptive, empowering perspectives

Importantly, ART does not require you to verbally share every detail of a traumatic event. The focus remains on resolution and relief.
