play therapy

Children don’t always have the words to explain what they’re thinking or feeling — and that’s okay. Play therapy is a developmentally appropriate, evidence-based approach that helps children express emotions, work through challenges, and build coping skills in a way that feels natural and safe.

Rather than relying on conversation alone, play therapy allows children to communicate through play, creativity, and imagination — creating space for healing without pressure or expectation.

Play Therapy

What Is Play Therapy?

Play therapy is not simply “playtime.” Sessions are intentionally structured and guided by a trained therapist using research-based therapeutic models. Within a carefully designed play environment, children are encouraged to explore emotions, relationships, and experiences at their own pace.

Through play, children can express thoughts and feelings they may not yet be able to put into words, while learning healthier ways to understand and manage their emotions.

How Play Therapy Works

At the heart of play therapy is the relationship between the child and therapist. Building trust and emotional safety allows children to feel secure enough to explore difficult experiences and develop new skills.

As your child plays, the therapist carefully observes patterns, themes, and behaviors that offer insight into emotional needs. Therapy may include:

  • Teaching emotional awareness and expression
  • Developing coping and regulation skills
  • Supporting social and communication skills
  • Encouraging healthy thought patterns and problem-solving
  • Providing a safe, supportive space for emotional healing

Sessions are designed to be engaging and enjoyable for children while remaining purposeful and therapeutic.

Who Can Benefit from Play Therapy

Play therapy may be helpful for children experiencing:

  • Anxiety, stress, or emotional regulation challenges
  • Behavioral concerns or big emotional reactions
  • Difficulty expressing thoughts or feelings
  • Family changes or life transitions
  • A need for additional emotional support
