EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based psychotherapy approach designed to help individuals process and heal from distressing or traumatic experiences. When overwhelming events are not fully processed, they can continue to affect emotions, beliefs, and the body long after the experience has passed. EMDR helps the brain reprocess these memories so they no longer feel as emotionally charged or disruptive.

Rather than focusing only on talking through past experiences, EMDR works with the brain’s natural ability to heal — allowing distress to decrease and more adaptive beliefs to take root.

What Is EMDR?

EMDR is a structured therapy approach that helps reduce emotional distress connected to traumatic or disturbing memories. During EMDR, clients briefly focus on emotionally challenging material while also engaging in bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements or other external cues.

As processing occurs, emotional intensity often decreases, negative beliefs shift, and the body’s stress response becomes calmer and more regulated.

How EMDR Works

EMDR therapy is conducted in phases and always at a pace that feels safe and supportive. Your therapist will guide you through the process, helping you:

  • Reprocess distressing or traumatic memories
  • Reduce emotional reactivity and physiological stress responses
  • Replace negative beliefs with more adaptive, empowering ones
  • Increase emotional regulation and resilience

Research shows that EMDR can help clients experience meaningful progress more efficiently than some traditional talk therapies — especially when addressing trauma or long-standing emotional pain.

Who Can Benefit from EMDR

EMDR may be helpful for individuals experiencing:

  • Trauma or distressing life events
  • Anxiety or panic symptoms
  • Intrusive thoughts or emotional triggers
  • Ongoing emotional distress connected to past experiences
  • Difficulty moving forward after overwhelming events
